TAKEMOTO: A Theatrical Dining Experience

Arthur Wing Fat Chan's Innovative Approach to Traditional Japanese Cuisine

Arthur Wing Fat Chan, a renowned designer, has created a unique dining experience at TAKEMOTO, a Japanese restaurant in Donggong, China. The design, which won the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2014, combines traditional Japanese cuisine with a theatrical dining experience.

The restaurant, which spans 650 square meters, features a thirty-people open dining area and eleven VIP rooms. The open dining area and stage-like food bar are surrounded by an illuminated uplight glass walk path, creating a dramatic centerpiece. The natural bamboo ceiling feature with directional spotlights in a dark color open ceiling adds another dramatic element to the main theme and draws attention to the center.

The VIP rooms are visually connected through a wood frame sliding door inserted with an engraved sandblasted glass panel of traditional fabric weaving pattern. The combination of different shades of neutral warm tone gives a rustic outlook, while the dark color wood provides a contrasting element. The use of natural wood and stone finishes, from smooth to heavy texture, along with stage lighting effect, creates layers of color shade and depth.

The design team, which included Arthur Chan, Byron To, Gavin Hsu, and Ben Leong, faced several challenges during the project. One of the main challenges was creating an outdoor nighttime stage scene inside a restaurant. Another was providing a semi-translucent visual barrier between the open dining area and VIP rooms.

The team conducted extensive research to overcome these challenges, investigating different lighting effects on various materials and textures to find the best-suited materials for the project. The result is a unique dining experience that cross-overs traditional Japanese cuisine with a theatrical ambiance.

The design of TAKEMOTO is a testament to Arthur Wing Fat Chan's innovative approach to design. The restaurant provides a new and exciting dining experience, setting a new standard for restaurant design. It is no wonder that this design was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2014, a testament to the designer's prodigy and wisdom.
